Florida FAQs

As of 2021, a Freedom Solar customer can expect to spend an average of $42,000 for an eight-kilowatt (kW) residential system. This cost includes equipment such as SunPower solar panels, labor, permitting, and inspections from homeowners associations (HOAs)

Federal incentives as well as local rebates and incentives will further lower your total cost once they go into effect.

The average home typically needs an eight-kW solar system to fully cover residential electricity needs. An eight-kW SunPower solar panel system from Freedom Solar has 24 solar panels.

If your home is on the lower end of electricity usage, you can sell your excess energy to your utility provider through a net metering program. That way, you are still benefiting from your panels without using their entire energy output.

Solar is not illegal in Florida, but there are some regulations that dictate how you can acquire and use solar panels. The Florida Solar Rights Act allows every state resident to buy and use solar panels, giving them full energy independence, but they have to be connected to the local grid.

Additionally, your Homeowners Association (HOA) has to approve your panels before an installation takes place. Or, if you live in a multi-unit property, building management will need to approve them. An inspection on the system’s height, orientation, and more will take place in either scenario and a refusal can only happen for a valid reason.

The solar investment tax credit (ITC) is a federal incentive available for anyone making the switch to solar power. The ITC helps you save 30% on your total project cost, which increased from 26% with the Inflation Reduction Act that passed in August 2022.

While Florida itself doesn’t offer a solar tax credit, you can still take advantage of city-level solar incentives and rebates.

Yes, Florida utility companies buy back electricity in accordance with local net metering programs

Florida requires homeowners to hire a licensed electrical contractor to install wiring for solar panels that are connected to the local electrical grid. If applicable, the system will also need to be approved by either your HOA or building management before and after installation to make sure that it complies with regulations.

Freedom Solar has a skilled service team that can safely and correctly install your system without any risk to your safety.

The sunshine state, and Tampa specifically, receives 244 days of sunshine a year which helps explain why Florida has seen a solar boom these past few years. Utility solar rebates can be combined with other local incentives and federal tax credits to make the switch to solar power systems accessible. These financial incentives, combined with increasing electric utility rates, make solar energy an investment decision that will continue to provide cost savings for years to come.

Home Battery Backup Systems

Backup power is a system that connects to electricity sources, typically solar panels and the electric grid, to store excess power and return it to your home when you need it, generally because of a power outage during an emergency. In most cases, your backup power supply will come from a generator or a battery. Today’s solar batteries are also intelligent energy management systems that can optimize your home’s energy usage to take advantage of utility time-of-use plans or to ensure that your electric car is charged with solar power.
