ENERGY STAR NextGen Certification
In September 2025, the EPA launches the ENERGY STAR® NextGen™ certification, which includes a renewable energy requirement for the first time.
What is ENERGY STAR Next Gen?
ENERGY STAR® NextGen™ is a new level of certification for U.S. commercial and multifamily buildings. It builds on the ENERGY STAR certification, available since 1999. ENERGY STAR NextGen-certified buildings are independently verified to be among the nation’s most energy-efficient, low-emissions buildings.
How do buildings become certified?
Commercial and multifamily buildings must be independently verified to:
- Demonstrate Superior Energy Performance: ENERGY STAR score of 75 or higher
- Meet a Direct Emissions Target: Direct greenhouse gas emissions intensity (GHGi) must be at or below a specified level
- Use Renewable Energy: Minimum 30% of the total energy it consumes—or 100% of the total electricity it consumes, if lower—must be from from eligible renewable sources.
The good news is that rooftop solar is not only eligible for certification, it can also deliver a rapid payback and strong ROI due to government incentives. Learn more about the certification and how to apply.
GSTC Accreditation
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council accreditation standard helps hotels book more rooms and pushes their name to the top of reservation sites.
About GSTC Accreditation benefit
Many hotel owners and travel partners use the GSTC framework and highlight Sustainable Hotels, such as Hilton, AMEX GBT (which preferences hotels with sustainability standards and has a goal of 25% by 2025), and Booking.com (which highlights hotels certified by GSTC-Accredited CBs along with other standards).
