As summer approaches, we’re spotlighting Freedom Solar customers. These folks are doing amazing things and spreading the positive impact of solar with the world!
Acts of Gratitude
The best part of our job is hearing from customers who are happy with the work we’ve done — and with whom we develop a relationship based on shared values. Pastor Stan and Mary Mills not only put it on paper but also made it a celebration!
When they came to our office to drop off the final payment for their solar project, they also brought a two-page letter thanking everyone involved in their project by name. Even sweeter, they brought an Easter cake to share with our team!
Spending the afternoon together was the highlight of our year so far, and we shed happy tears. It may be the most heartfelt thank-you we’ve ever gotten from a customer. But the truth is that we’re the grateful ones.
We can’t put into words how much we appreciate each and every one of our customers. Thank you for allowing us to do what we do and for sharing part of your story with us.
A Glimpse Into the Future of Resilient Homes
Fifth-generation Texan and geologist Darrell Brownlow built the home of his dreams using low-impact construction techniques on his family’s ranch. Solar is one of the central elements of his sustainable “treehouse.” The treehouse also includes other unique features, such as complete xeriscaping of his yard and a geothermal heating and cooling system. The Carrizo Aquifer, which runs 130 feet below his home, enables the system.
Watch the installation of his phase 3 solar expansion last fall, and read more about his unique home here.
As reports of grid instability rise, more people are considering going solar and adding another level of security with backup batteries. Watch this video of a recent Tesla Powerwall installation at the certified Passive House of architect Trey Farmer. The Tesla Powerwall pairs with his solar panels and other singular energy efficiency features to keep the power on and protect his family, regardless of grid outages or what the weather throws his way. We pride ourselves on our craftsmanship and ability to take on difficult challenges that others won’t. It’s part of our core values!
Last year, we completed our most arduous project to date for a Northwest Austin home. It involved a fully offset solar array, batteries to back up critical loads for the house and garage, EV charging and a service upgrade to cover higher future electrical needs. And we did it all while preserving the existing property and landscaping.
From digging 200 feet of trenching during the epic winter freeze of February 2021 to passing 10 inspections across three permits (on the first pass) and rerouting the electrical, gas and telecom service — this project had it all. Now, we’ve “future-proofed” the home exactly as the homeowner dreamed!
After completing this project, we even created a coffee table book to highlight the hard work and dedication Freedom Solar put into the project. Read more here!
We Love the Great Outdoors — and Support Our Customers!
Part of taking care of our customers is supporting the causes they’re passionate about. Those causes include one of our favorite things: the great outdoors!
Our customer Steve H. was excited to share solar in his community. So he invited us to join him at a fundraising event where we provided education to attendees and helped raise money for the San Gabriel Fly Fishers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Its mission is to teach the sport of fly fishing through conservation, friendship and good sportsmanship.
This tournament raised funds for disabled veterans, people recovering from cancer, children in foster care and environmental conservation. Read more about these causes!

You Made Willie (and Mother Earth) Proud!
Thanks to all of you, we rang in Willie Nelson’s birthday and Earth Day with hundreds of people sharing the news of solar through our referral program in April! Willie is a prominent Austin icon and focuses on fighting climate change. We want to thank you for telling so many of your friends and family about the benefits of solar.
We’re thrilled to welcome more than 450 people who submitted their first referral to our program. And the six people who sent in more than 10 names particularly impressed us! You’re doing your part to make an even bigger impact.
Teamwork makes the dream work!
Some highlights of this campaign were the widespread message that solar is part of the future, and homeowners should take advantage of its long-term savings and positive environmental impact.
