Freedom Solar’s Gift of Renewable Energy Enables Southeastern Food Bank to Feed More Hungry Families in Central Florida During the Season of Giving
Christmas came early this year as Freedom Solar gifted a complimentary installation of a $113,000 solar array at the Winter Garden, Florida, headquarters of Southeastern Food Bank. Freedom’s donation will help offset the food bank’s energy costs and fuel its mission of feeding 50,000 food-insecure children, elderly and families in Central Florida this holiday season.
Southeastern Food Bank provides food and counseling for more than 88,000 families and individuals in need across Florida and Alabama. They serve multiple demographics, including low-income households, those experiencing homelessness, unemployed or disabled individuals, alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers, children’s homes, and senior citizen organizations.
Mark Anthony, Southeastern Food Bank President, discovered his love for solar when installing Freedom Solar panels in his own home. After experiencing the benefits of solar first-hand, he decided to install solar panels at the food bank. After the Freedom Solar team met Mark and learned about the food bank’s mission, they were sold. Freedom Solar decided to donate all the panels and installation, helping the food bank have lower and more predictable operating expenses for years, ensuring the sustainability of their mission for the long-term future.
71 Maxeon (previously SunPower)® solar panels were installed on the rooftop of the dry storage warehouse at Southeastern Food Bank’s headquarters. These panels are capable of producing more than 47,200 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity every year, enough clean, renewable energy to power 70% of the nonprofit’s annual energy use. Southeastern Food Bank will save $236,000 in energy costs over the lifetime of the system. The food bank will be able to feed, on average, an additional 800 local families due to these record savings.
“We’ve seen a big escalation in the number of needy families as the cost of living keeps going up,” said Mark Anthony. “Because of Freedom Solar, we’re able to save $800 or more per month. That helps us to offset fuel costs so we can get food from all over the state of Florida.”
